In Highway 2 Overcrossing, the transverse seismic component of ground motion was predominant causing shear key failures.
As the steel dowels providing shear-friction resistance of the key are very close to the exterior portion of bent cap, tension cracks had developed and extended down into the bent cap, causing damage in weakly confined potion of the cap. This photo clearly shows the damaged shear key and bent cap at the intermediate bent.
